A consulting Study to Identify and Develop Academic Specializations in the Field of Natural Reserves

Project Description:

The project aims to help achieve the overall goal of restoring, vegetation in the northern desert of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia between the Eastern Province and the Northern Border region by establishing Terrestrial Protected Areas (TPA) around 22 Faydats (areas where water collects during and after the occurrence of floods), covering an area of 360 km2. Ten pilot study plots (PSP) with an area of one hectare each will be selected to conduct various pilot studies to restore vegetation for three consecutive years. The pilot studies will evaluate different cultivation and restoration methods and techniques for the restoration of vegetation within Terrestrial Protected Areas (TPAs). These studies will also help improve the success of future agriculture efforts to restore vegetation in Hafer Al-Batin Governorate.

Activities and Results:

Activities:

Extensive office and field studies are conducted to identify 22 Faydats (TPA) and 10 Pilot Study Plots (PSP) in Hafer Al-Batin Governorate to implement research experiments on the techniques and practices adopted to restore wild vegetation cover in the study area and focus on permanent wild species of trees, shrubs, and local perennial grasses. The project will also apply water harvesting techniques to benefit from rainwater in the vegetation cover development and benefit the local community as well. The project will also adopt a mechanism to protect land protection areas from overgrazing and other human activities harmful to the environment. The project uses remote sensing techniques and satellite imagery to contribute to vegetation restoration efforts effectively.

The project will contribute to the sustainable use of vegetation cover in the project area, spread environmental awareness and the importance of preserving natural resources in the region, and motivate the people, civil society organizations, and government agencies in Hafer Al-Batin Governorate to actively participate in the project activities, especially the acquisition of seeds and breeding seedlings necessary for the project and other logistical matters essential for the success of the project.
